University of Insulindependence (U of IN) assists us in expanding our outreach capacities through volunteer leadership training. Our curriculum is designed by a world-class professional faculty in the areas of organizational development, community outreach and diabetes health and management. Students participate in general education workshops and hands-on recreation sessions. Those who complete the program (Captains) are certified to serve their local communities as mentors and chapter event leaders.
Subsequent practicum sessions vary depending on volunteers’ recreation foci (i.e., triathlon, wilderness exploration, running, etc). In these settings, volunteers share real and powerful experiences to discover innate abilities, gain self-esteem, and develop a sense of responsibility toward others.
